Classification of inorganic compounds. Periodic table, electronic structure and elements (periodicity of physical and chemical properties, ionization energies and electron affinities, electronegativity). Molecular shape, the VSEPR model. Bonding models: VB and MO theory. Introduction to molecular symmetry and bonding in polyatomic molecules. Structure and energy relations in metallic and ionic solids. Coordination complexes (definition and terminology), stability constants, factors affecting the stabilities of complexes - HASB theory. Hydrogen, polar and non-polar bonds, hydrogen isotopes, hydrogen bonding, binary hydrides - classification and properties. Elements of s- and p-block (occurrence, extraction and use, physical properties, structure and chemical properties of its compounds). Elements of d -block (CF and LF theory). Chemistry of the first row metals of d-block elements. The 2 and 3 row metals of d-block. Organometallic compounds. Lanthanoides and actinoides.

Lecture

Bioinorganic chemistry as an interdyscyplinary science. Iron-containing proteins: hemoproteins as oxygen and electron carriers; iron-sulfur proteins; uptake, transport and storage of iron. Copper-containing proteins: types of active copper centers; electron transfer; specific antioxidants. Cobalamins: vitamin and coenzyme B12.

Biological functions of molybdenum, vanadium, tungsten, nickel, chromium and manganese. Zinc as biometal: enzymatic catalysis, structural and gene-regulatory functions. Function and transport of alkali and alkaline earth metal cations; natural and synthetic ionophores. Metal toxciity. Coordination complexes as therapeutic and diagnostic agents. Radiopharmaceuticals.

Laboratory classes

Identification and activity of metalloproteins isolated from biological material, synthesis, characterization and properties of synthetic models of metalloproteins.
