  • the annual hourly workload of the student’s work required to achieve the expected learning outcomes for a given stage is 1500-1800h, corresponding to 60 ECTS;

  • 1 ECTS point corresponds to 25-30 hours of student work needed to achieve the assumed learning outcomes;
  • weekly student workload necessary to achieve the assumed learning outcomes allows to obtain 1.5 ECTS;

Short description:

Examination of contemporary ethical and social controversies in a rigorous, philosophical manner. Mostly in the analytic philosophical tradition.

Topics may include: methodology of applied ethics; abortion, euthanasia, vaccine mandates; ethics of vegetarianism; drug laws and legalization; ethics of war; free speech and censorship; ethics of immigration etc.

Welcome to our Applied Ethics course, a concise yet comprehensive journey through the ethical landscapes that shape our world. This course is designed to sharpen your critical thinking and argumentation skills, teaching you to think and write with the clarity of a philosopher. We'll delve into core ethical theories, equipping you with the tools to tackle contemporary issues across a spectrum of topics:

- Matters of Life and Death: Navigate the complexities of abortion, euthanasia, war, capital punishment, and famine relief.

- Rights and Responsibilities: Explore the ethical dimensions of immigration, gun rights, free speech, education, and drug laws.

- Animals and Environment: Consider the moral implications of vegetarianism and our responsibility towards climate change.

- State and Power: Examine the ethics of taxation and the foundations of democracy.

- Sexual Ethics: Discuss the moral considerations surrounding prostitution, casual sex, and the ethics of procreation.

Having completed the course, students will:

- Gain a basic understanding of philosophical methodology and the methods of pursuing questions in applied/practical ethics

- Recognize the relevance of ethical considerations to controversies and debates we encounter in our daily lives

- Critically engage with philosophical ideas verbally and in writing

- Acquire an in-depth understanding of ethical problems involved in contemporary moral controversies

- Develop clear and well-justified views on ethical subjects relating issues of contemporary relevance

- Develop an ability to present their ideas in a clear and precise way in writing and speaking
