Short description:

The course is focused on the problems of art and folk music editing.In art music, the editorial canon comprises: introductory work on the music manuscript, recognizing mistakes, comparing variants and adding necessary supplements, preparing layout of musical text (rewriting the composition and preparing for print), preparing revisory comments, assessing the text. The work is based on the 18th-19th century manuscripts. Musical score will be prepared in the note processor Finale.Specificity of folk music, including its dependency on socio-cultural context, oral transmission, and variability, requires methods other than those applied to art music. Due to their change in time, the methods are presented on the example of historical material (Oskar Kolberg's Opera omnia) and new editions (the series Polish Folksong and Folk Music). Students: 1) gain the basic knowledge of: historical changes in art and folk music editing; preparing critical editions of musical text; basic principles of editing folk music repertoire; using note processor Finale; using music databases; 2) gain the understanding of: specificity of art and folk music; necessity of applying methods appropriate to the repertoire; 3) gain the skills necessary to: work individually on music manuscript and prepare it for critical edition; use electronic databases and note processor Finale; encode folk tunes into a simple database; work in a team.
