Module learning aims:

This is an introductory course in anthropological theories and methods for CREOLE students. Its main aim is to introduce the students to the key theoretical problems addressed by anthropology; classic works of key shapers of the world anthropological traditions; and methods used during fieldwork.

Students should have basic knowledge of the discipline and its main topics of interest.

TK_01 Key theoretical approaches in anthropology TAM_01, TAM_03, TAM_04

Learning outcomes:

TAM_01 Have knowledge of the main theoretical perspectives and debates in anthropology E_W01, E_W02, E_W03, E_W04, E_U01, E_U02, E_U03, E_U06

TAM_02 Have knowledge of the ethnographic theory and method, as well as of participatory observations and other methods used within the discipline E_W02, E_W03, E_U02, E_U03, E_U04, E_U06

TAM_03 Develop ability to engage with academic literature and scholarly debates in the field E_W01, E_W02, E_W03, E_W04, E_U06, E_U07, E_K01, E_K10

TAM_04 Work on designing her own fieldwork and MA project E_U08, E_U09

Assessment methods and assessment criteria:

Students will be expected to prepare to read key texts for each session and actively participate in class discussions (20% of the final mark), prepare one short seminar presentation based on one of the weekly key readings (20% of the final mark) and write an essay on one of the chosen topics (60% of the final mark).

A/5 EXCELLENT - outstanding performance

B/4+ VERY GOOD - above average with few minor mistakes and/or omissions

C/4 GOOD - generally sound work with some minor mistakes and/or omissions

D/3+ SATISFACTORY – fair, but with a number of serious mistakes and/or omissions

E/3 SUFFICIENT – fair, but with significant shortcomings

F/2 FAIL
