  • the annual hourly workload of the student’s work required to achieve the expected learning outcomes for a given stage is 1500-1800h, corresponding to 60 ECTS;
  • the student’s weekly hourly workload is 45 h;
  • 1 ECTS point corresponds to 25-30 hours of student work needed to achieve the assumed learning outcomes;
  • weekly student workload necessary to achieve the assumed learning outcomes allows to obtain 1.5 ECTS;
  • work required to pass the course, which has been assigned 3 ECTS, constitutes 10% of the semester student load.

Module learning aims:

The aim of the course is an introduction to the basic issues of archaeology, conceptualisation and understanding of an archaeological record and formation processes, as well methods of analysis of archaeological data, concepts of explanation and interpretation.

Full description:

The course aims to address: a position of archaeology within the structure of science, in particular its relation to history and anthropology; major categories of archaeological data along with methods of their analysis, including dating methods; major categories of prehistoric archaeology such as archaeological culture, industry, and communicating community.

Learning outcomes:

Student will gain the basic knowledge of:

(1) relationship between archaeology and philosophy as well as a position of archaeology in the humanities,

(2) history of archaeology,

(3) major categories in archaeology, in particular concepts of culture,

(4) research problem solving in archaeology,

(5) archaeological methods (invasive and non-invasive),

(6) dating methods of archaeological materials,

(7) relationship between research hypotheses and applied methods.

Assessment methods and assessment criteria:

Class participation, in class presentation, written final test (classes) and final exam.
