This course aims to develop the student's knowledge and understanding of the present state of research on the Roman architecture and art from its beginnings through the Republic to the Empire in the light of broader political, social and cultural changes taking place in those times. It also looks ahead to the art and architecture of the fourth century AD, which despite the emergence of Christianity as the dominant religion continued to be influenced by Roman styles and themes. The main aim of the course is to acquire the appreciation of historical and social circumstances that made the development of Roman art and architecture possible.

Year 3

The course is intended to offer students a fundamental knowledge of the archaeology and art of ancient Rome. The course has as its temporal scope the period from the beginning of Iron Age in Italy (limited to the ancient Etruria and Latium) until the Late Antiquity. The lectures explore major issues of Roman urbanism and architecture (including topography of the city of Rome), development of sculpture (statue, portraiture and relief, sarcophagi), wall paintings, mosaics and minor arts. The course focus on the changes of styles and themes in Roman architecture and art but in the relation to their historical and social background. First of all the question of personal, social and cultural identity of the patrons is key to understand the nature of the Roman architecture and art, which seemed display of wealth and power but at the same time social struggles and mobility within a strictly hierarchical social order. The classes are focusing primarily on daily life in ancient Rome, drawing widely on rich contemporary sources, above all material aspects of public and private lives, rituals, actions, institutions and religion.

As a result of the course student:

1) gains the basic knowledge of the archaeological evidence of subsequent period, and gains the knowledge of the relevant terms, concepts and research tools used in the study of the ancient Rome, as well as of the results of latest research in the field of Roman archaeology and art;

2) gains an understanding of the archaeological, art-historical and historical issues and questions that have directed research into the ancient Rome;

3) demonstrates an ability to identify and analyze Roman antiquities and, as a result of analysis of their characteristic features, to determine their date and cultural identity.

Student demonstrates an ability to evaluate critically archaeological and art evidence that concerned ancient Rome and gains the skills to discuss the issues in their work. It enables a conscious increasing of his/her knowledge on the topic in the future.

Class participation, active involvement in all class discussion, in-class presentations on choosen topic and written essay, visual identification tests (with slides), mid-term tests, final oral exam.
