The aim of the course is to provide students with the state of the research in regard to the so called historical archaeology in Poland.

Full description:

The aim of the course is to provide students with the state of the research in regard to the so called historical archaeology in Poland. Issues to be discussed during the course include: structures on fortified settlements; defensive structures (castles and burgs); rural settlement and the development of towns; burial rites, ecclesiastical buildings (cathedrals, parochial churches, monasteries and convents); mintage policy; weaponry and other elements of material culture.

Learning outcomes:

The student: 1) learns about the changes of ‘historical’ settlement in Poland with relation to the history of architecture, defensive structures and material culture;

2) understands the significance of research on historical archaeology and its role in contemporary world; in relation to interdisciplinary research (especially related to archaeology, history and history of art) and the studies on the medieval material and symbolic culture;

3) can identify examples of medieval structures within discussed area; reconstruct fragmentarily preserved elements of monumental architecture; comprehend the subject literature; employ advanced notions and terms related to the subject; interpret the obtained sources in a broader cultural context.
