Historia teatru brytyjskiego

The aim of this course is to give students basic knowledge as to the theatrical practices and dramatic works in Britain since the Middle Ages up to contemporary times. Particular periods in the history of British theatre and drama will be presented and chosen representative dramatic works will be analysed with a special emphasis on the theatrical conventions employed at their time of production. Medieval theatre and drama, Elizabethan theatre and drama, Restoration period, theatre and drama in the nineteenth century, realism and naturalism, symbolism, expressionism and epic theatre and the theatre since World War II will be the focal points of particular classes. The social and literary context will be given, the role of the actors, actor-managers, directors and the functioning of the theatres including the fringe ones will be presented.

Credits will be given on the basis of participation in class discussions, group work and student presentations.
