Short description: |
This lecture is divided into two parts. Firstly, it will present the most important theories of gender studies and feminism. Secondly, the lecture will present gender inequalities in selected fields of social life. The aim of this course is to introduce, both the most important theories and their practical use within sociological research. |

1. Gender studies - introduction. Women's studies, men's studies, queer theory. 2. Feminism - the history of social movement and different types. 3. Women's ogranisations in Poland. Social perception of feminism in Poland. 4. Sex - gender. Gender as a performative category (J.Butler). 5. "Doing gender" in social interactions. 6. Sex/gender and the body. 7. Socialization as a process of acquiring gender (family, school, media). 8. Gender and family life. 9. Social debates concerning maternity, abortion and in vitro. 10. Gender and work. 11. Gender and policy. 12. The language of gender. 13. Representations of femininity and masculinity in media. 14. Gender and sport. 15. Crossing gender. |

Learning outcomes: |
After this course student should: 1. know the most important theories concerning construction of gender 2. reconstruct and explain the process of gender socialization 3. distinguish the most important feminist and gender theoretical conceptions 4. recognize forms of gender differerentation in selected areas of social life 5. indicate manifestations of gender discrimination in polish society 6. critically analyze media from gender perspective 7. use known concepts and notions to describe social processes and phenomena from gender perspective 8. is conscious of existence of gender inequalities in different areas of social life |

Written exam divided in two parts: 1. questions concerning lecture, 2. problem questions. |
