ECTS credit allocation (and other scores): 4.00 Basic information on ECTS credits allocation principles:
  • the annual hourly workload of the student’s work required to achieve the expected learning outcomes for a given stage is 1500-1800h, corresponding to 60 ECTS;
  • the student’s weekly hourly workload is 45 h;
  • 1 ECTS point corresponds to 25-30 hours of student work needed to achieve the assumed learning outcomes;
  • weekly student workload necessary to achieve the assumed learning outcomes allows to obtain 1.5 ECTS;
  • work required to pass the course, which has been assigned 3 ECTS, constitutes 10% of the semester student load.

Module learning aims:

1. Extending the knowledge of the written and spoken academic register – vocabulary and phraseology – in general terms and within the selected academic discipline.

2. Extending the skills in effective use of sources in terms of critical reading as well as citing and synthesis applied in a scientific text or presentation.

3. Furthering of academic presentation skills, academic argumentation skills and academic discussion in both writing and speaking.

4. Learning the critical requirements of the scientific text in terms of its general construction and rhetorical structure of its component parts.

5. Development of skills needed in editing and troubleshooting of academic texts.

2. Summary, paraphrase, synthesis, non-plagiarism – practice with academic texts

3. Descriptions of language data – spoken and written exercises

4. Presentation and discussion of selected theoretical and research aspects of the BA diploma project

5. Critical reading of scientific texts

6. Structure of the academic/scientific text

7. Writing practice

8. Discussion and correction of BA paper excerpts

9. WA Stylesheet – document formatting, citing sources, listing references

Learning outcomes:

Upon completion of the course, the student:

1. Is able to effectively use the academic register of the selected academic discipline in both speech and writing

2. Is able to effectively summarize, paraphrase and synthesize information found in academic sources

3. Is able to present and discuss publicly research data and academic views

4. Is able to critically and appropriately respond to presentation contents and views of other researchers.

5. Understands the construction of a scientific text and is able to apply it – in particular to own BA diploma paper

6. Effectively edits and troubleshoots academic texts.

excellent (bdb; 5.0): very good practical knowledge of the spoken and written academic/scientific register; very good skills in presenting and discussing academic/research contents; very good skills in citing sources and referring to data in text and presentations; very good skills in scientific text editing and troubleshooting.

very good (+db; 4.5): 1-2 competencies acquired at a level slightly below the excellent

good (db; 4.0): good level of acquiring all or almost all of the competencies

satisfactory (+dst; 3.5): 1-2 competencies acquired at a sufficient level
