  • the annual hourly workload of the student’s work required to achieve the expected learning outcomes for a given stage is 1500-1800h, corresponding to 60 ECTS;
  • the student’s weekly hourly workload is 45 h;
  • 1 ECTS point corresponds to 25-30 hours of student work needed to achieve the assumed learning outcomes;
  • weekly student workload necessary to achieve the assumed learning outcomes allows to obtain 1.5 ECTS;

Module learning aims:

The objective of the course is the practical study of English as a foreign language. Students develop their language skills at an advanced level. At the end of the course students reach a fluency level of at least C2+.

Short description:

Practical study of English as a foreign language at an advanced level

Full description:

The course is for advanced students of English and is based on materials taught in English. As a result various aspects of communication are taught in English.

The first group of topics includes introduction to intercultural research, the definition of culture, its role in human life, various manifestations of culture, dimensions of culture and their influence on communities.

The second group of topics is based on practical questions regarding human communication: strategies of communication, presupposition, various views of the world and ways of reconciling them.

The third group of topics concerns the matters of Deaf communities. They include Deaf community in Poland and the importance of sign language for identity of deaf people.

The other groups of topics are based on students interests and also on the basis of current events in Poland and the rest of the world.

- applied communication, especially on the basis of works of Suzette Haden Elgin

- minority languages, especially the Polish sign language, on the basis of lecturer's own research;

Learning outcomes:

Students can read the literature, popular science and specialist texts in the original

Students have no difficulty in understanding spoken texts, in direct conversation or in the media.

Students can express their ideas fluently, spontaneously and accurately. They can rephrase what they say, and can idioms and colloquial expressions with ease.

Students can produce complex written texts that are grammatically and lexically correct

Students have acquired a habit of always being up-to-date with cultural, political, economic matters, and consequently have extensive knowledge of English-speaking countries
