Philosophy

Shaping liberal arts students' general intellectual culture.

Listeners acquire professional knowledge and competence in understanding (interpreting) main areas of philosophical investigations and trends; students get familiar with the transformations of philosophical images of the world.

The skills should be developed of understanding and interpreting of philosophical topoi of contemporary symbolic culture. The acquisition of skills both at understanding of the philosophical text and at methodologically correct reasoning within the philosophical discourse.

Students get acquainted both with the tradition and the present of linguistic philosophy, axio-linguistics, including the spectrum of relevant references.

The review of the historical continuity of the development of main philosophical issues within the range of Mediterranean culture. An introduction to basic philosophical notions and terminology. The areas of epistemology, axiology, and philosophy of language are taken into special consideration. Some wider intercultural contexts are also referred to. Philosophy is taken as an inspiration for independent, critical, creative thinking as well as an art of interpretation of empirical world. The relationship among philosophy and linguistics. An introduction to axio-linguistics and ethics.

After the course the Student:

Is able to demonstrate the influence of the Greek philosophy on the European culture.

Is able to demonstrate the main philosophic trends beginning from the ancient Greece, Rome, the Middle Ages up to contemporary times.

Knows the basic areas of study in philosophy.

Is able to demonstrate the acquaintance of the basic notions of philosophy and morality (ethics).

Is able to read and interpret philosophic texts with understanding.

Is aware of the most fameous philosophic works.

Is capable of analysing selected philosophic problems by her/himself.

Possesses the ability of analytic and critical thinking.

Is able to enlist the most important social transformationos of the world's representation in the Mediterranean culture area.

Can make use of teamworking.

A writing test (minimum 61% for a positive mark).
