Module learning aims: | This is a general EFL course at an intermediate level. Its main objective is to further develop students' practical skills such as speaking, reading, listening and writing so that they reach the B2 level at the end of the course. |

Topics to discuss: - flatmates (looking for a flat, sharing a flat, ideal flatmates) - asking personal questions - talking about your experiences - making phone calls and polite requests - social issues and problems - surveillance society - expressing opinions and supporting viewpoints - ingredients of happiness (what makes you happy) - playing games and sports - computer games - holidays (types, destinations, niche holidays) - how does it work? (describing procedures) - telling stories and anecdotes - wishes and regrets - books (reading habits, summarising a plot, your favourite book, e-books) - expressing likes and dislikes - inventions (the best and the worst inventions, the effects of inventions) - talking about changes - consumer society - advertising (tactics, influence, art) - brainstorming and suggesting ideas - how to show reservations and express doubts - age (ages of man, generations, the best period of your life) - your future hopes and plans - talking about yourself - persuading and asking for clarification Vocabulary: - personality - habits - descriptions of people - feelings (-ing/-ed adjectives) - phrases used in advertisements - social issues - surveillance techniques and equipment - opinion adjectives - good and bad behaviour - locations - regrets (I kick myself for, on second thought, with hindsight, etc.) - famous sayings - likes and dislikes - verbs/phrases to describe changes - language of advertising - adjectives to describe ideas - age (maturity, be in your prime, etc.) - optimism and pessimism Grammar: - tenses - verbs (aspects, patterns, forms, phrasal verbs) - indirect questions - the passive - used to / would - be / get used to - uncountable nouns and pluralia tantum - I wish / if only - articles - conditional sentences (type ), 1, 2) - modal verbs (obligation, prohibition, permission, ability) Writing: - paragraph - letters of complaint - opinion essays Pronunciation: - word stress - compound stress - vowels in unstressed syllables - basic intonation patterns |

Learning outcomes: |
After the course the student: Understands main ideas of standard written texts whose topics discuss those aspects of life that they are familiar with, e.g. school, work, free time Understands relatively simple and coherent spoken utterances which discuss the topics they are familiar with or interested in Can express their opinions and justify them briefly Can talk about various events and experiences Can write a short paragraph in which they express their views on topics that they are familiar with Is able to pronounce English phonemes correctly and use correct word stress/intonation Moreover, students are familiar with the main cultural aspects of major English speaking countries |
Assessment methods and assessment criteria: |
In order to get credit for the classes students have to: - pass all the tests - prepare and present speeches - submit written assignments (paragraphs and letters) - submit homework The final grade for the course depends on the final examination result. Students are allowed to 2 unexcused absences per term |
