  • the annual hourly workload of the student’s work required to achieve the expected learning outcomes for a given stage is 1500-1800h, corresponding to 60 ECTS;
  • the student’s weekly hourly workload is 45 h;
  • 1 ECTS point corresponds to 25-30 hours of student work needed to achieve the assumed learning outcomes;
  • weekly student workload necessary to achieve the assumed learning outcomes allows to obtain 1.5 ECTS;
  • work required to pass the course, which has been assigned 3 ECTS, constitutes 10% of the semester student load.

This is a general EFL course at an intermediate level. Its main objective is to develop students' practical skills such as speaking, reading, listening and writing as well as consolidate and expand their lexical and gramatical knowledge at the B2 level.

English as a Foreign Language at an intermediate level. Considerable emphasis is put on the balanced development of all language skills.

Vocabulary and grammar at B1+/B2 level e.g.

- tenses

- verbs (aspects, patterns, forms, phrasal verbs)

- indirect questions

- the passive

- used to / would

- be / get used to

- uncountable nouns and pluralia tantum

- I wish / if only

- articles

- conditional sentences (type 1, 2)

- modal verbs (obligation, prohibition, permission, ability)

Writing:

- various typoes of paragraphs

Pronunciation:

- word stress

- compound stress

- vowels in unstressed syllables

- basic intonation patterns

Learning outcomes:

After the course the student:

Understands main ideas of standard written texts whose topics discuss those aspects of life that they are familiar with, e.g. school, work, free time

Understands relatively simple and coherent spoken utterances which discuss the topics they are familiar with or interested in

Can express their opinions and justify them briefly

Can talk about various events and experiences

Can write a short paragraph in which they express their views on topics that they are familiar with

Is able to pronounce English phonemes correctly and use correct word stress/intonation

Moreover, students are familiar with the main cultural aspects of major English speaking countries

Assessment methods and assessment criteria:

In order to get credit for the classes students have to:

- pass all the tests

- prepare and present speeches

- submit written assignments (paragraphs and letters)

- submit homework

The final grade for the course depends on the final examination result and the final class grade (for both semesters).

Students are allowed to have 2 unexcused absences per term
