Short description:

SUBJECT AND INTERESTS OF GERONTOLOGY IN RELATION TO OTHER DISCIPLINES: research area.

AGEING OF SOCIETIES: demographic characteristics of ageing population and measurement criteria, risk groups, consequences of ageing societies.

THEORIES OF AGING: biological and social theories.

INTERDISCIPLINARY CHARACTER OF THE PROBLEMS OF AGEING AND OLD AGE. : criteria of old age, basic physiological, psychological and social changes.

INDIVIDUAL DIMENSION OF AGEING: personality, intelligence, learning and memory, stress factors, disease and disability, developmental tasks for elderly people; atrophy of opportunities, elderly people's attitude towards old age.

ELDERLY PEOPLE AND SOCIETY: old age in the value system, stereotypes and attitudes towards the elderly, lost of important social roles, determinants of lowering status of the oldest generation, seniors in social structure, social devices in care of the elderly.

Full description:

1. Performing the cognitive function: presenting the place of gerontology among other academic disciplines (including sociology), presenting the subject of ageing and old age in its biological, psychosocial and behavioral; applying sociological terms and categories to describe and explain phenomena and processes related to ageing, specifying the role of the elderly in society and conditioning of everyday life of the elderly and their participation in social life.

2. Preparing professional tools for the need of social practice: providing information necessary to build measuring and descriptive tools to analyze the situation of the elderly in their social lives, providing knowledge needed for the analysis of social position and study of the efficiency of the elderly made by specialists of public health, sociologists, social workers, etc.

3. Social education: crossing the old age paradigm based on common knowledge, stereotypes and social myths concerning ageing and the elderly, which may result not only in understanding the deficits, but first of all the potential of the elderly and rules of functional and active old age.
