Short description:	The course presents classification of instruments, their historical development, function and sound. Apart from art music instruments, the focus is also on non-professional instruments functioning in Polish folk culture, with reference to European instrumentarium. Presented are all group of Polish folk music instruments, with special attention paid to instruments crucial to folk practice. Each instrument is presented in terms of its construction, place in folk culture, repertoire, changes and contemporary use.
Full description:	Students: 1) gain the basic knowledge of: the way of producing sound on the variety of instruments, the way they are built, their sound properties and the various musical contexts in which they have been used in the history; instruments shaping Polish folk music; history of folk instruments and their changes; the role of musical instruments in rituals of annual and family-life cycle; 2) gain the understanding of: the importance the choice of instruments plays in performing different kinds of music; instrumental idioms; differences between professional and non-professional instruments in terms of their construction, playing technique, repertoire and context of functioning; 3) gain the skills necessary to: recognize instruments both visually and aurally; compare their idioms verbally.
