ECTS credit allocation (and other scores): 5.00 Basic information on ECTS credits allocation principles:
  • the annual hourly workload of the student’s work required to achieve the expected learning outcomes for a given stage is 1500-1800h, corresponding to 60 ECTS;
  • the student’s weekly hourly workload is 45 h;
  • 1 ECTS point corresponds to 25-30 hours of student work needed to achieve the assumed learning outcomes;
  • weekly student workload necessary to achieve the assumed learning outcomes allows to obtain 1.5 ECTS;
  • work required to pass the course, which has been assigned 3 ECTS, constitutes 10% of the semester student load.

Short description:

During the lecture the following issues will be discussed:

- biological classification and function of the trace elements;

- justification of the necessity of trace elements determination in the environmental samples;

- sampling, preservation and storage of the environmental samples before trace elements analysis;

- methods of enrichment and isolation of trace elements;

- speciation analysis of the environmental samples, conception of speciation and its significance in the bioinorganic chemistry;

- atomic absorption spectrometry in environmental samples analysis: flow injection analysis, background correction methods, usage of matrix and analyte modifiers;

- Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectrometry (ICP-OES) and Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS), principle of these methods and their application to the environmental, biological and food samples analysis;

- the quality of the analytical result.

Full description:

The aim of the course is presentation of the whole analytical procedure related to determination of trace elements in environmental samples by spectroscopic methods, such as: Flame Atomic Absorption Spectrometry (FAAS), Electrothermal Atomic Absorption Spectrometry (ETAAS), Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectrometry (ICP-OES), Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS). The analytical procedure consists of many stages starting from the very important one, which is sampling, concluding on the estimation and calculation of the uncertainty of the obtained analytical result.
